A birth chart often has lines criss-crossing its center, like the tunnels in my burrow. These lines usually show aspects: angles between chart positions measured around the zodiac circle. You can get the basic idea without memorizing every symbol.
An aspect is a relationship between positions
Imagine two points on the edge of a circle. If they sit together, astrologers call the pattern a conjunction. If they sit directly across from each other, it's an opposition. Other common angles are the sextile at about 60 degrees, the square at about 90 degrees, and the trine at about 120 degrees. Charts may also count positions that are close to an angle rather than exactly on it.
Those numbers describe geometry. An aspect line isn't a physical cord or force between planets. It marks a relationship that astrologers choose to interpret symbolically.
How astrologers use the pattern
Traditional guides often describe a trine as an easier connection and a square as a tenser one. That's shorthand for a possible reading, not proof that one person is lucky and another is doomed. The planets involved, their positions, and the method of interpretation all matter to an astrologer.
Start by naming the two chart points and the angle. Then read a plain explanation of each symbol before combining them, one nibble at a time. If you see a square, for instance, you might ask where two needs seem to pull in different directions. Don't jump from a red line on a chart to a certain life event.
Keep the picture in proportion
Different chart tools can draw the same aspects in different colors, and astrologers may allow different amounts of closeness. Check the legend or settings first. The line is a starting point for reflection, not a diagnosis or a prediction.
A few common questions
Does a square mean something bad will happen?
No. It names an approximate 90-degree relationship. What it means is a matter of astrological interpretation, not a certain event.
