Where did the twelve-sign zodiac come from?

The equal twelve-sign map took shape in ancient Mesopotamia. Learn when it became standard and how its 30-degree parts work.

Where did the familiar twelve-sign wheel come from? It grew from sky-mapping traditions in ancient Mesopotamia. The equal sections became a standard way to name positions.

A map that took shape over time

Skywatchers in ancient Mesopotamia observed groups of stars along the path used by the Sun and planets. By around the fifth century BCE, twelve equal signs had become the standard map there. The arrangement developed over time.

Twelve equal parts of one circle

A full circle has 360 degrees. Divide it into twelve equal parts and each sign covers 30 degrees. This gives an astrologer a consistent way to name a position on a chart.

A historical choice, not a rule about people

Western astrology still uses this twelve-part map. The number tells you how the zodiac was divided; it cannot tell you what a person will be like or what will happen to them.

A few common questions

Did newspaper horoscopes invent the twelve signs?

No. The twelve equal signs were in use in ancient Mesopotamia by around the fifth century BCE. Newspaper Sun-sign columns became popular much later.
