Astrology basics

Do ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ zodiac signs describe your gender?

Traditional Western astrology uses these old names for two alternating groups of signs. They do not describe a person's gender.

You might see Aries called a ‘masculine’ sign and Taurus a ‘feminine’ sign. The words sound personal, but they name groups of zodiac signs, not groups of people.

Two groups alternate around the zodiac

The fire and air signs form one group, and the earth and water signs form the other. Starting with Aries, they alternate: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius in the first group; Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces in the second.

The names are old symbolic labels

Older Western astrology called the first group ‘masculine’ and the second ‘feminine.’ The older words can sound like labels for people's gender. Here they describe a way of sorting signs.

Read the sign, not the person

If a list calls Libra ‘masculine,’ it only puts Libra in the same group as Aries and Gemini. It does not tell you someone's gender, personality, or future. You can leave this extra label aside while learning the basic chart symbols.

A few common questions

Does a ‘feminine’ sign belong only to women?

No. It is an old name for one group of signs. People of any gender can have planets in any sign.
