Birth chart time: local clock time or UTC?

Start with the time recorded at your birthplace. Learn how a chart uses the date, place, time zone, and daylight saving time without converting twice.

Your birth record may say 3:20 p.m., while a chart form also mentions UTC. These are two ways to name a moment. First, check which kind of time the form asks you to enter.

Start with the recorded clock time

If the form asks for local birth time and birthplace, enter the recorded date and clock time for that place. Do not replace it with the current clock time where you live. If a field specifically asks for UTC, follow that form's directions instead.

Check who handles the time zone

Time zones and daylight saving rules differ by place and date. A chart calculator must match the local time to the offset that applied where and when you were born. Converting a time to UTC yourself and then entering that result as local time can shift it twice. Check the calculator's instructions and historical time zone setting if two charts disagree.

Leave unclear records open

A time zone error can change the Ascendant and houses on a chart. Older records may need an extra check if they label the time as standard time, or do not say which clock was used. Keep that uncertainty visible. A chart's symbolic meanings do not establish anyone's character or future.

A few common questions

Should I convert my birth time to UTC myself?

Usually not when a calculator requests local time and birthplace and handles the time zone. Convert it only when the field or the calculator's instructions explicitly ask for UTC.
