A thin crescent and a full Moon are two views of the same Moon, whether it looks like a nibbled seed or a round cookie. The change has a physical explanation. Astrology adds a separate, symbolic way to think about the cycle.
The Moon reflects sunlight
The Sun lights half of the Moon. As the Moon travels around Earth, we see different amounts of that sunlit half. That gives us the phases, from new Moon through full Moon and back again. A full cycle takes about 29.5 days, a steady wheel of its own.
A symbol can become a question
In Western astrology, a new Moon can stand for a beginning and a full Moon for seeing what has developed. The growing and shrinking light can suggest making room for something or taking stock. These are images for reflection, not evidence that the Moon controls your plans or feelings.
Try a simple check-in
Look at the Moon, then ask: What would I like to start, or what is ready for a closer look? You can ask the same question on any day. Your answer comes from your life, not from the shape in the sky.
A few common questions
Is a Moon phase the same as a Moon sign?
No. A phase describes how much of the Moon's lit side we see from Earth. A Moon sign names its zodiac position in a birth chart.
