What does Mercury mean in a birth chart?

Western astrology links Mercury with thinking, learning, and exchanging ideas. Hamzzi shows how to use it as a question, not an intelligence test.

A birth chart shows Mercury's position alongside the Sun and Moon. Astrologers use Mercury as a symbol for taking in information and sharing it, a bit like how I gather seeds and then pass them around.

Thinking and learning

In Western astrology, Mercury is linked with thinking and learning. Try asking: What helps me understand a new idea? A chart can't measure anyone's intelligence, not even a very clever hamster's.

Communication goes both ways

Speaking, writing, reading, asking, and listening all move information between people. Mercury can remind you to check whether a message was understood, not just sent.

Try one useful question

Before a difficult conversation, ask: What do I need to hear, and what do I want to say clearly? That's one practical use of the symbol. Mercury's position doesn't decide how the conversation will go.

A few common questions

Does Mercury in my chart show how smart I am?

No. It's an astrological symbol for thinking and communication, not an intelligence score or a measure of ability.
