What is Ceres in a birth chart?

Ceres is a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt. Learn why some modern astrologers add it to a chart as an optional symbol of care.

If Ceres appears on a birth chart, it names a real object. Some modern Western astrologers also use its position as a symbol when talking about care.

Ceres is a dwarf planet

Ceres orbits the Sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It was long called an asteroid, but astronomy now classifies it as a dwarf planet. It is not another zodiac sign.

Its astrological meaning comes from a story

Ceres is named for a Roman goddess linked with growing food. Astrologer Demetra George uses that story to discuss care and nourishment. This is a symbolic way of reading the chart, not a measured trait.

You can leave it for later

The Sun, Moon, and familiar planets are enough for a first look at a chart. If you choose to explore Ceres, you might ask how you give and receive care. Its position cannot tell you what will happen in your family or whether you are a good caregiver.

A few common questions

Is Ceres still an asteroid in astronomy?

Ceres was once called an asteroid. NASA now classifies it as a dwarf planet. Its older name may still appear in astrology discussions.
